Soc Son

A fresh place to unwind A green lung at the edge of the city

Soc Son is a sacred mountainous land north of Hanoi, where dramatic natural scenery meets deep spiritual heritage. Around 35 km from the city centre, Soc Son is often described as one of Hanoi’s green lungs, with rolling hills, clear lakes and vast pine forests. According to the legend of Saint Giong, it was here on Soc Mountain that the national hero rode his iron horse into the heavens after defeating the An invaders. The sacred legacy is preserved at Giong Temple and Non Nuoc Pagoda and remains a powerful symbol of courage and patriotism.

Leaving behind traffic and unfinished meetings, Soc Son opens into a gentler refuge of low hills softened by morning mist, winding roads beneath whispering pines and the warm scent of earth after light rain. Soc Son does not call loudly for attention—it simply offers a slower breath, a wider sky and a sense of peace that makes one visit feel like an invitation to return.

Sights to visit in Destinantions

Dong Do Lake

Dong Do Lake stretches like a giant mirror among deep green hills, reflecting slow-moving clouds overhead. Visitors can paddle SUP boards or kayaks, sit on the grass by the water or simply let the breeze pass by. Sunset is especially beautiful, when the final light turns the lake orange and everything seems to slow down.

Thanh Chuong Viet Palace

Thanh Chuong Viet Palace is a distinctive cultural space that thoughtfully recreates the architecture and atmosphere of traditional Vietnamese villages. Old houses, moss-covered brick gates, lotus ponds, wells and narrow brick lanes come together in a nostalgic setting. It is ideal for slow walks, tea and photography with a strong sense of old Vietnam.

Twin Mountains of Soc Son

From the summit of the Twin Mountains, the landscape of Soc Son opens out across lakes, villages and fields stretching toward the horizon. Late-afternoon light warms the slopes, while sunset brings soft violet tones. It suits travellers looking for a gentle outing: walking, taking photos and simply sitting with the wind and grass.

Non Nuoc Pagoda

Non Nuoc Pagoda rests on a small mountain overlooking peaceful fields and villages below. The winding path rises through the hillside into cooler, cleaner air. The pagoda has a quiet, timeworn beauty, and its evening bell carries across the landscape. Visitors come not only to worship but also to find a calm moment away from everyday busyness.

Festivals of the year in the region

Giong Festival – a traditional celebration honouring Saint Giong

Soc Son’s best-known festival is closely tied to the legend of Saint Giong ascending to the heavens. Usually held in the first lunar month over several days, it attracts large numbers of visitors and pilgrims. Processions, flag dances and folk performances recreate the spirit of the young hero from Phu Dong who defeated the An invaders. Bamboo flowers and carefully prepared traditional rituals express wishes for peace, prosperity and good harvests. The Giong Festival is recognised by UNESCO as representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Local food

Soc Son cuisine Flavours of forest, lake and mountain herbs

Soc Son cuisine reflects its semi-mountainous landscape: rustic, uncomplicated and full of natural flavour. Ingredients often come from surrounding hills, lakes and home gardens, giving local dishes a fresh, naturally sweet character. Meals here are memorable for woodsmoke, charcoal aromas, warm rice wine and easy conversation carried on the forest breeze.

Hill chicken

Known for its firm, flavourful meat, Soc Son hill chicken is delicious simply boiled and served with lime, salt and pepper. Grilled chicken, salt-roasted chicken, chicken-and-corn soup and chicken braised in coconut water are also popular choices for a local food journey.

Dong Quan Lake braised fish

Each clay pot is prepared with care. Fresh fish is seasoned with a blend of spices and slowly braised over a wood fire for 14 to 16 hours. The result is tender, aromatic fish whose natural sweetness blends deeply with the seasoning.

A rustic local favourite Green-sauce banh duc

Green-sauce banh duc is a rustic dish loved by many visitors to Soc Son. Its striking green-and-white pattern comes from rice flour combined with natural greens, creating a simple dish with a distinctive appearance and flavour.

Climate seasons

Soc Son has a northern tropical monsoon climate, but its low hills, forests and lakes make it noticeably cooler and more pleasant than central Hanoi. The four seasons are clearly felt: a soft and humid spring, a greener and cooler summer, a gentle golden autumn and a mild, crisp winter.
