Tam Dao

A town on the mountainside The Da Lat of Northern Vietnam

Tam Dao is in Vinh Phuc Province, around 80 km from Hanoi, and is famous as a town above the clouds. True to its name, the area is formed around three prominent peaks rising above the sea of clouds: Thach Ban, Thien Thi and Phu Nghia. The road to Tam Dao winds along green mountain slopes; the higher you climb, the closer the clouds feel and the cooler the air becomes, as though you are entering another world—quiet and dreamlike.

Tam Dao is only about a two-hour drive from Hanoi, yet the atmosphere changes completely on arrival: cool air, mountain winds and the clean scent of forest. On sunny days, clouds drift at eye level from the centre of town; on colder days, mist settles over the stone steps and old church, creating an effortless mountain beauty. Tam Dao is compact enough to explore on foot, with well-known stops such as the stone church, Cau May, mountain-view cafés and the night market with its inviting grilled food. Coffee among the clouds in the morning, local chayote shoots and hot hill chicken at midday, then an evening stroll in the cool air—this is a place to rest without turning the trip into a checklist.

Sights to visit in Destinantions

Tam Dao Stone Church

Tam Dao Stone Church is one of the town’s best-known landmarks. Built in a classic European style on elevated ground, it overlooks much of the town. In the early morning and late afternoon, mist settles over the stone steps, while mountain wind and church bells create a quiet atmosphere. It is often one of the first places visitors stop to experience Tam Dao’s feeling of being above the clouds.

Tam Dao National Park

Tam Dao National Park is a rich green landscape for nature lovers, with diverse forest ecosystems, rare flora and fauna and trekking routes suitable for different levels. Cool forest paths and sunlight filtering through the canopy create an ideal setting for walking, photography and simply spending time in cleaner mountain air.

Temple of the Mountain Goddess

The temple sits high on the mountain, reached by steps winding through green forest. It is a well-known spiritual site where visitors pray for peace, health and prosperity. The setting is solemn without feeling heavy, with cool mountain winds and broad views over Tam Dao. The journey combines pilgrimage with scenic exploration.

Tam Dao Heaven Gate

Heaven Gate is one of Tam Dao’s finest viewpoints, opening onto seas of clouds and layered mountain ranges. The road climbs along the mountainside, becoming cooler and more dramatic with elevation. On clear days clouds drift at eye level; in colder weather the mist gives the area the feel of a small European mountain town.

Cau May

Cau May lies a little away from the town centre and rewards the climb with broad views across clouds and mountains. Early in the morning, clouds often gather below the walkway, creating a striking white valley. The peaceful setting is popular for couple and wedding photography, especially for visitors who arrive early with a light jacket and a hot drink.

Festivals of the year in the region

Festival season in Tam Dao takes place in the early months of the year, when visitors combine pilgrimages to Tay Thien and the Temple of the Mountain Goddess with sightseeing and leisure travel. The lively yet cool mountain atmosphere makes this a comfortable season for worship, exploration and enjoying local specialties.

Tay Thien Festival

The Tay Thien Festival is one of Tam Dao’s largest and most distinctive celebrations, associated with the worship of Mother Goddess Tay Thien – Lang Thi Tieu. Usually held in the second lunar month amid dramatic mountains, streams and ancient religious sites, the festival draws visitors and Buddhist pilgrims for incense offerings, palanquin processions and chau van performances. The pilgrimage route is both a spiritual journey and an opportunity to experience Tam Dao’s mountain scenery, making the festival a time to seek peace and good fortune for the year ahead.
Lantern Night is a highlight of the Tay Thien festival season, when thousands of candles and lanterns illuminate the heritage complex. Visitors take part to pray for peace and good health while experiencing a solemn yet welcoming atmosphere in the Tam Dao mountains after dark.

Local food

Cuisine of Tam Dao

Tam Dao is known not only for its misty mountain scenery but also for a food culture that brings visitors back. Rustic dishes draw on the flavours of the highlands and local produce, making food an essential part of the Tam Dao experience.

Chayote

Chayote is Tam Dao’s signature produce, grown widely across the mountain slopes. The cool climate gives the young shoots a crisp texture and natural sweetness. Popular preparations include stir-fried chayote shoots with garlic, boiled chayote with sesame salt and chayote soup.

Hill chicken Tam Dao

Free-range hill chicken is one of the best-known specialties of Tay Thien – Tam Dao. Raised naturally on the mountain slopes, the meat is firm, gently chewy and naturally sweet. It is served charcoal-grilled, steamed with lime leaves or in a light chicken hotpot, often paired with lime, salt and pepper.

Mountain pork

Local mountain pigs are small, lean and firm-fleshed, making them well suited to mixed platters. A typical platter may include steamed, grilled and stir-fried pork, mock-civet style pork and pork wrapped in wild betel leaves, served with forest greens and cham cheo dipping salt.

Rare beef with ant bites

This unusual Tam Dao specialty uses fresh beef exposed briefly near forest ant nests, allowing the ants to bite the meat and impart a subtle natural tang. The beef is then lightly singed, sliced thin and served with ginger fish sauce or cham cheo, producing a fragrant, sweet and slightly tingling flavour.

Glutinous rice dumplings with sugarcane molasses

These soft, chewy dumplings are made from glutinous rice flour and coated in thick sugarcane molasses. They have a gentle sweetness and a distinctive aroma, especially popular in colder weather and during festival season as a simple local treat to take home.

Climate seasons

Tam Dao lies more than 1,000 metres above sea level, giving it a cool climate throughout the year with average temperatures of around 18–20°C. A single day can seem to pass through all four seasons: a spring-like chill in the morning, gentle summer sunshine at midday, an autumn feel toward late afternoon and a distinctly wintery coolness after dark. A light jacket is therefore useful even outside the colder months.
