Son Tay – Ba Vi

Explore the land A Land of Heritage and Remarkable People

Peaceful Dong Mo lies across Son Tay and part of Ba Vi, around 40 km west of central Hanoi. The legend of Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh is closely tied to the dramatic terrain of Ba Vi, whose mountains rise more than 1,000 metres. Temples dedicated to Son Tinh—one of the Four Immortals in Vietnamese folk belief—dot the area, while a vast reservoir of roughly 500 hectares stretches below the mountains with islands scattered across its surface.

Son Tay is long regarded as a land of remarkable people and cultural heritage. Known for the saying “one hamlet, two kings,” Xu Doai preserves many legends connected with the early history of the Vietnamese people. Local communities in Son Tay and Ba Vi are also known for their craftsmanship, from pottery and Phu Nhi rice cakes to embroidery in Ngoc Kien and tea growing and processing in Phu Yen and Ba Trai. Old houses, straightforward local character and generations of traditional craftsmanship give Xu Doai its distinctive identity. Centuries-old village communal houses and laterite homes remain preserved today, creating strong foundations for cultural and spiritual tourism, retreats and hands-on experiences.

Festivals of the year in the region

Son Tay is a land of richly distinctive festivals where folk belief and community life blend naturally. Festival season is often centred around temples, communal houses and ancient ironwood forests, filled with drums, traditional dress and ceremonial processions that remain carefully preserved today.

Vietnam Ethnic Culture Day Festival

Held at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in Dong Mo, the festival brings together the country’s 54 ethnic groups, each with its own clothing, music, dance and cuisine. Visitors can experience a colourful “miniature Vietnam”: listen to Then singing, watch Xoe dancing, try traditional costumes, taste regional dishes and discover distinctive rituals. It is both a festive and reflective journey into the diversity of Vietnamese culture.
The festival honours Saint Tan Vien, the sacred deity of Ba Vi Mountain and one of the Four Immortals in Vietnamese folk belief. In spring, ceremonial palanquin processions, festival drums and incense fill the Son Tay – Ba Vi region. Visitors take part in a sacred tradition while experiencing the culture of Xu Doai, where belief, history and nature come together.
When spring returns to Xu Doai, Va Temple enters festival season. The road through the old ironwood forest comes alive with drums and colourful processions. Visitors come not only to honour Saint Tan, or Son Tinh, but also to immerse themselves in a living cultural space where faith, celebration and the spirit of spring meet.
Tet Nhay is one of the most important festivals of the Dao people, held in early spring to honour ancestors and pray for peace and good harvests. Traditional dance rituals unfold for hours amid colourful costumes, drums and gongs, reflecting a life deeply connected to the mountains and forests.
Muong New Year is celebrated warmly in stilt houses beside glowing hearths, with the sound of gongs carrying through the mountains. Traditional meals, colourful brocade clothing, graceful dances and New Year wishes create a celebration that feels both ancient and welcoming.
Held in a village setting at the foot of Ba Vi, the Khe Thuong festival combines solemn processions and rituals with folk games and community celebration. It offers visitors a close look at the spiritual life and cultural traditions of Xu Doai that have been preserved across generations.

Climate seasons

Son Tay – Ba Vi has a tropical monsoon climate, but its hills, mountains and large lakes make the air cooler and fresher than central Hanoi. Spring is cool and often misty; summer is generally more comfortable and well suited to retreats; autumn brings clear skies and gentle winds; and winter is relatively dry, with drifting clouds sometimes settling over the mountain peaks. The distinct four seasons, mountain breezes, forest scents and broad lake views make Son Tay an ideal escape from the pace of the city.
